Catharsis presents: Patterns of Perception (DE) + Josefine Hellström

Welcome to the next edition of Catharsis; a club night dedicated to emotional climax through techno, curated by Josefine Hellström. Returning to Inkonst after a summer hiatus with the legendary Berlin collective Patterns of Perception (DE).

Catharsis (from Greek κάθαρσις, katharsis, meaning “purification” or “cleansing” or “clarification”) is purgation of emotions through dramatic art, or any extreme emotional state that results in renewal and restoration. With focus on high quality techno and rave culture, Catharsis honors nostalgia and celebrates decadence, liberation and energy in its highest form. Characterized by emotive melodies and hard-hitting drums, the duality of euphoria and melancholy defines the storytelling of Catharsis. It’s a peak time, cutting edge sugar rush designed for dancefloors.

PATTERNS OF PERCEPTION (DE)

Formed in Berlin in 2016, Patterns of Perception is a platform for exploration within the psychedelic depths of electronic music. Occupying a unique space in the Berlin club scene, the collective’s six members share the vision of cultivating compelling, visionary electronic music. Through heady club nights at legendary Berlin club Ohm, a tightly curated record label and much celebrated mix series, the collective gives emerging and established artists a platform to explore a diverse range of sounds within the fields of techno, ambient and electronica. With deep roots in the electronic music community, a commitment to inclusivity, and a forward-thinking musical vision, Patterns of Perception is a platform beyond the music itself.
At Catharsis, Patterns of Perception will be represented by Kim Bergstrand and Steve Duncan, who will go back-to-back for an extended DJ set that is sure to move your bodies as much as it will play with your minds.

KIM BERGSTRAND (PATTERNS OF PERCEPTION)

From Malmö, via Melbourne and now Berlin – Kim’s DJ sets are as vibrant as the places he calls home. Having immersed himself in tech house and early minimal techno in his teens, Kim eventually discovered psychedelic electronic music via cult podcast mmml ssgs and outdoor festivals like Labyrinth. Since establishing the Patterns of Perception platform with his partner Bianca and four friends in Berlin in 2016, Kim has added new shades to his sound, and has together with the collective been devoted to fill a void for deeper, hypnotic dance music in the otherwise so diverse Berlin scene – whether it’s through their tightly curated podcast, heady club nights in legendary Berlin venue Ohm, or newly launched record label. With a rhythmic aesthetic and always present groove, Kim’s sets are as sophisticated and sleek, as they are playful and psychedelic. While the foundation might be techno, genre is less important for Kim, who cares more about taking you on a trip with his distinct brand of “mind and body music”.

STEVE DUNCAN (PATTERNS OF PERCEPTION)

Diversity and vibrancy have fuelled Steve Duncan’s approach as a DJ, propelling him towards a sound that is percussive, rhythmic and emotive in equal measure. Cutting his teeth as a DJ in his home country of Australia many moons ago, Steve’s finely-honed aesthetic reached further fruition upon moving to Berlin in 2013, where he co-founded the Patterns of Perception platform with five close friends. Now based in Helsinki, Steve’s penchant for rhythm, narrative and adventure is infused in all that he creates.

JOSEFINE HELLSTRÖM (CATHARSIS / ALLEYCAT ANTHEM)

It’s the contrasts that get you. Sharp edges soft to the touch, like translucent lace on sun-cracked asphalt. Moving through an intoxicating, unpredictable array of rough breakbeats – it is the raw tonality and temperament that makes Josefine a fearsome reputation as a selector. Straight to the point with elements of colorful melodies, reflected through infectious tribal-esque rhythms and rugged cut UK bass – is what appears throughout her music and in her sets. This techno is a powerful intent to build tension, climaxing into a frenzy of emotions, and also the reason why Josefine is one of the most sought-after DJs in the Scandinavian region.
