About the talk
What is happening with Malmö’s club scene? The once so vibrant city isn’t so vibrant anymore, or is it? Is it true that young people today aren’t as interested in going out dancing and partying as they used to be? Or is it a question of funding, complaining neighbours and political circumstances hindering the nightlife? A panel of local as well as international club promoters investigate the current climate for clubbing in Malmö and beyond. What can we do to help create the new rhythm of the night?
Moderator: Sonya Lindfors (FI)
Sonya Lindfors is an award – winning Cameroonian-Finnish choreographer and artistic director who also works with facilitating, community organizing and education. Lindfors’ recent works One Drop (2023), common moves (2023), We Should All Be Dreaming, camouflage (2021), Soft Variations Online (2020) centralize questions around Blackness and Black body politics, representation and power structures, speculative futurities and decolonial dreaming practices.
On a larger scale Lindfors’ time is divided between her own artistic work, educational work and working as the artistic director of UrbanApa. Lucas Benjamin (NL)
Lucas Benjamin is an Amsterdam-based DJ, promoter and true musicologist.
His first encounters with music started at an early age. As the son of a DJ and musician he was nourished with a broad selection of sounds. His true passion for music evolved when he started dancing at the age of twelve. Unifying his mind, body and soul with tribal drumbreaks, powerful funky horn sections and soulful vocals made him experience the true essence of jazz, funk and soul. Since his beginnings Lucas always had a great interest in music and its history which made him spent hours in record-stores, educating himself by analysing numerous records.
His musical journey is a never-ending continuous quest that has been taking him deep into Afro & Brazilian music alongside the latest electronic experiments. Lucas founded the Wicked Wax record label, is part of the Ghetto Funk Collective, as well as parties such as MORE BOUNCE and more recently, the educational platform Steppin’ Into Tomorrow. He has organized plenty of club nights, live concerts, documentary screenings, gives music history lectures and mentors upcoming DJs. In short, a person living music in its totality.
