Laurel Halo presents Atlas w/ Leila Bordreuil + Ingri Høyland (NO)

RIYL: William Basinski, Hyperdub, Boomkat AOTY 2023, NTS Resident, Bendik Giske, Lucy Railton, Coby Sey, GAS, neo-classical, minimalism, acoustic meets electronic, The Caretaker.

Laurel Halo is a composer, producer, live musician and DJ. Drawing from a range of influences – including Detroit techno, musique concrète, film score, and jazz – her music employs a careful blend of pressure, decay, and nuanced emotion to explore notions of transmission and impermanence. Since 2012, she has released a number of albums ranging in genre-fluidity, complexity and scope, including Quarantine (2012, Hyperdub), In Situ (2015, Honest Jon’s), and Raw Silk Uncut Wood (2018, Latency). She has performed in venues, festivals, clubs and institutions across the world, including the Southbank Centre, Sydney Opera House, Sónar, and Montreux Jazz Festival, among others. She has collaborated with artists and designers including Moritz von Oswald, Metahaven, Kevin Beasley, Julia Holter, John Cale, and the London Contemporary Orchestra.

2023 saw the launch of her own label, Awe – which shares the name of her regular NTS show – and the artist’s new album Atlas. Another stylistic turn, Atlas’ weightless beauty occupies a liminal space between ambient, jazz, and classical, and features contributions from the likes of saxophonist Bendik Giske, musical polymath Coby Sey, and cellist Lucy Railton. Receiving universal praise – including inclusion on many end of year lists – the live rendition of it sees Halo performing on grand piano and electronics, accompanied by acclaimed cellist Leila Bordreuil.

SUPPORT: Ingri Høyland (NO)

Ingri Høyland is a Norwegian composer and sound artist who transforms fluid mental states into sound and stories. Her work spans film, commissioned pieces, dance installations, mixtapes, and exhibitions. In late 2023, she released ”Ode To Stone,” a critically acclaimed sound piece dedicated to a protected coastal area in Denmark. Sound and Silence praised it as a ”silky journey dotted with traps and temptations.”

With a passion for cross-disciplinary work, Høyland is frequently involved with collaborative projects and processes. In 2023, she was invited by CPH:DOX to score Shozin Fukui’s 1989 sci-fi thriller “Catepillar”. SMK also invited her to interpret visual art resulting in the performance “Body, Longing, Death”.

She also performs experimental trip-hop as Hôy la, playing at festivals like Roskilde and Øyafestivalen. Her music blends storytelling with non-linear structures, creating a caring and present sound.
