Bass, drums, processed cello and vocals form the volatile core of Blanco Teta, the Buenos Aires-born quartet pushing punk into stranger, harsher territory. Their music is physical and unruly, driven by noise, no-wave, grunge and DIY electronics, with a live presence built for catharsis rather than passive observation.
Formed in 2017, Blanco Teta emerged from Argentina’s dissident queer underground with an unconventional rock setup and a desire to dismantle the expectations attached to it. Carola Zelaschi, Carlos Quebrada aka Genosidra, Violeta García and Josefina Barreix turn cello, bass, drums and voice into a dense and frequently abrasive language of their own. Distortion accumulates, rhythms fracture and songs threaten to collapse under their own pressure.
Their latest album, La Debacle de las Divas, was recorded largely live between Buenos Aires and Barcelona. Released by Bongo Joe Records, it carries the immediacy of four musicians occupying the same room after years spent living across different countries. Punk abrasion, metallic grunge and corrosive walls of sound run through songs that remain unexpectedly direct.
At its centre is the figure of the exhausted diva: no longer a “rising star,” stuck on the Flixbus, navigating platform capitalism, precarious labour and the absurd demand to remain permanently visible. Blanco Teta answer with humour, anger and a refusal of meritocratic mythology. Their politics are embedded in the performance itself: queer, Latin American, working-class and defiantly collective.
Onstage, that energy becomes confrontation and release. Blanco Teta do not so much perform at an audience as pull it into the beautiful mess.
