Moor Mother is the project of Camae Ayewa, a musician, poet and visual artist whose work channels Black history, radical imagination and collective memory through sound. Moving through electronic music, free jazz, hip-hop, noise and spoken word, she has developed a language where music becomes a tool for research, transmission and liberation.
Born in Maryland and based in Philadelphia, Ayewa works across disciplines with an approach deeply informed by archival research and Black radical traditions. Central to her practice is Black Quantum Futurism, the interdisciplinary project she co-founded with Rasheedah Phillips, which explores alternative experiences of time and space through Afrofuturist thought, writing, music and visual art. These ideas run throughout Moor Mother’s work, where the past remains active and history becomes material to be questioned, sampled and rewritten.
Her 2016 debut Fetish Bones, released by Don Giovanni Records, introduced this methodology with extraordinary force. Its dense electronics, fragmented samples and incantatory poetry confronted histories of enslavement, racial violence and erasure, establishing Ayewa as one of the most singular voices in contemporary experimental music. Ten years after its release, she returns to perform the album in full.
Since then, her restless practice has expanded through albums including Analog Fluids of Sonic Black Holes, Black Encyclopedia of the Air, Jazz Codes and The Great Bailout. She also performs with free-jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements and has collaborated with artists including Lonnie Holley, Mary Lattimore, billy woods and Nicole Mitchell.
Across it all, Moor Mother treats sound as an archive with its doors blown open.
