For over a decade, Against All Logic (A.A.L.) has been a parallel current in the work of Nicolás Jaar. A space where club music is stretched, compressed, and reassembled into something physical and quietly intricate.
At Intonal, Jaar will perform a rare DJ set under the A.A.L. moniker, one that fuses rhythmic depth with sonic excavation; deliberate, drawn-out, immersive.
Focusing on house and techno, A.A.L. explores rhythm as architecture. Grooves emerge in layers, textures fold in and out, and samples draw from archives both personal and political. Albums like 2012–2017 and 2017–2019 carry the weight of memory and repetition, punctuated by collaborations with FKA twigs, Lydia Lunch, and fragments of Linton Kwesi Johnson. There is movement, but no fixed direction, just a slow modulation of energy and tone.
This is dance music with its seams exposed, where tension and release unfold in gestures that feel both communal and inward.
