Colin Stetson, Stian Westerhus, and Erland Dahlen converge in 1017, a trio operating at the edge of pressure and release. Named after the theoretical energy required to create a black hole, the project channels that same unstable pull into a live experience where density, tension, and emotional exposure become inseparable forces.
1017 moves through scorched drones, fractured song forms, and towering melodic structures with total commitment. Stetson’s circular breathing and physically overwhelming saxophone work generate immense waves of resonance and overtones, shaped by a career that has seen him collaborate with Laurie Anderson, Bon Iver, and Tom Waits. Westerhus stretches the electric guitar into volatile new terrain — smearing tones into vast harmonic fields, tearing open distortion, and delivering vocals that feel exposed down to the nerve, carrying echoes of his work alongside Sidsel Endresen and Nils Petter Molvær. Dahlen anchors and destabilises in equal measure, shaping momentum through deep percussion, metallic textures, and his unmistakable bell work, informed by collaborations with Jenny Hval, Mats Gustafsson, and Fire! Orchestra.
Rather than settling into a fixed language, 1017 continuously mutates. Songs dissolve into abstraction before reforming as something sharper, darker, and unexpectedly intimate. There are traces of art rock, free jazz, ambient composition, and noise music woven into the trio’s sound, but nothing remains static for long. Onstage, the band approaches performance as a process of constant transformation — an evolving system of pressure, collapse, and release.
Following a widely celebrated debut tour in 2024, 1017 returns in 2026 with their first studio album and an extensive run of international shows.
