Twenty years ago, Inkonst moved into Bergsgatan 29 and an old chocolate factory became home to the country's most incomparable cultural institution – two decades of culture, community, and artistic experimentation, and the beginning of at least as many more. Come celebrate with us! Free entry and lots of exciting things happening!
Already in 2003, the municipal council decided to let the cultural association Inkonst, (then a small member association with four employees and a strained economy) move into what the politicians called "the cultural house Chokladfabriken."
There had long been discussions about what would happen to the old Mazetti building, which the municipality had purchased back in 1992 after chocolate production was shut down. Skånes Dansteater and Teater Terrier were possible candidates to move in, but in the end, the choice fell on Inkonst. The municipality wanted an association from the independent cultural scene in Malmö, and Inkonst had in a few years grown into an important cultural and entertainment venue primarily for a young audience, with the aim from the start to present a program outside the commercial. The then barrack-like premises in Möllevångsgården, Folkets Park, were also in great need of renovation, and the 550 sqm also meant significant limitations on audience numbers. Once the decision was made, it would still take time before the inauguration at Bergsgatan 29 could take place in February 2006.

Since then, 20 years have passed, and many of us have had our first encounter with innovative concerts, experimental performing arts, sweaty dance floors, and cultural experiences beyond the ordinary on our stages. World artists have played at Inkonst before they broke through, the performing arts have received nationwide attention more than once. The Intonal festival was born and grows larger every year.
Here we have met, laughed, fallen in love, danced, been provoked, debated, listened, and lost ourselves in the most beautiful things life has to offer, the meeting, the art, and the culture. Now we invite you all to come and celebrate with us, 20 years on Bergsgatan and hopefully at least as many more!
